Most men don’t think much about their skin until issues like irritation, redness or breakouts appear. It’s easy to overlook daily skin care, but a few small, consistent steps can prevent problems in the long run.
Over the years, my own approach has evolved. I used to focus on treating breakouts and managing my oily skin. I relied heavily on tretinoin, which is a prescription-strength retinoid that is amazing for clearing spots and boosting cell turnover - but it made my skin sensitive. Now, I focus on maintaining long-term skin health. What works for me might not suit everyone, but there are a few key principles I’ve found that make a difference.
My daily skincare routine
Mornings start with the Dr Somji Detoxifying Charcoal Cleanser, which cleans my skin and removes impurities without disrupting the skin barrier. I follow with the Dr Somji Anti-Redness Concentrate, which contains centella exosomes to help keep my sensitive skin and psoriasis under control, especially after shaving.
I always turn to the Dr Somji Signature Serum because it's packed with actives that are essential for healthy skin, including encapsulated retinol, which is safe to use during the day; pre and probiotics plus anti-oxidant rich green tangerine exosomes. I finish with Dr Somji Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF 30 because it protects from UVA and UVB rays and also the blue light from screens.
In the evening, I double cleanse (especially after clinic or filming days), then alternate between the Dr Somji Night Recovery Cream, which features non-irritating encapsulated retinol and blue microalgae to calm the skin's stress response, and the SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore for barrier support.
How to prepare skin for stage and filming days
When I’m presenting or filming, the lighting can be intense, so good preparation is important. The night before, I exfoliate using a mandelic acid chemical peel from the Tebiskin range. I like this because it’s gentle enough not to cause redness but effective enough to smooth and brighten.
In the day, I layer our Dr Somji Anti-Blemish Concentrate to reduce shine with the Dr Somji Signature Serum Light, Dr Somji Exosome Barrier Repair Serum and the Dr Somji Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF 30 - this combination gives my skin a really flawless finish that looks great on camera.
Travel and holiday skincare routine
Travel can be dehydrating for the skin, so I focus on barrier protection and hydration. I always pack the Dr Somji Nourishing Cream Cleanser to gently remove sunscreen, grime and pollution.
The Dr Somji Anti-Redness Concentrate is brilliant after flights, to reduce redness and restore hydration. I also take the Dr Somji Night Recovery Cream to protect against environmental stress and our Dr Somji Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF 30, which is essential, even on cloudy days or when flying. I also use the antioxidant rich iS Clinical Copper Firming Mist - it's a real skin saviour when you’re 35,000 feet in the air.
For men new to skincare
Keep it simple and strategic. You don’t need an elaborate ten-step routine; you just need a few products with the right ingredients, used every single day along SPF, so you’re not undoing all your efforts. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser. Treat with a Dr Somji Concentrate of your choice - this will depend on skin type and concern, then hydrate with the Dr Somji Night Recovery Cream to repair skin overnight. In the morning, protect skin from sun exposure and pollution with Dr Somji Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF 30. That’s all most men need to see a genuine improvement. Once this becomes part of your daily routine, you can build from there with more targeted actives.
