Pigmentation is a pain and it frustrates me as much as it frustrates my patients. I see it frequently in clinic, and even with the best treatments, it can come back if you don't support your skin with the right products at home. To understand why it's so persistent, you first need to understand what's actually happening in your skin.
Understanding pigmentation
Pigmentation shows up when melanin - the pigment responsible for our skin's colour, goes into overdrive and produces unevenly. This can show up in several different ways. Years of sun exposure can leave behind age spots and sun damage. A bout of acne or even a burn from a hair straightener can leave post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Heat exposure or hormonal changes - during pregnancy for example, can trigger melasma, which appears as larger patches of discolouration. And then there's just a general uneven tone that leaves skin looking dull.
Why is pigmentation so difficult to treat?
You can see pigmentation on the skin's surface, but that's not where it starts. Melanin is produced deep within the skin by cells called melanocytes. That's why the right ingredients matter so much - they need to work within the skin to target melanin production and fade existing discolouration too. Time is also a factor, which I'm always honest with my patients about. Pigmentation takes time to develop and it takes time to fade.
Meet the new Dr Somji Anti-Dark Spot Concentrate
After years of treating patients at Dr MediSpa and testing different products, ingredients and treatments, we decided to create our own formula. The result is our most potent brightening formulation yet. The Dr Somji Anti-Dark Spot Concentrate targets sun damage, age spots, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone and post-blemish marks - all in one concentrate.
Inside the formula
We are very proud of this product, which fades dark spots and pigmentation with multiple ingredients. This light and silky concentrate is packed with some of the most advanced brightening actives available and each one has been chosen for a reason.
Swiss cress extract is one of our heroes. It's a liposomal form of Swiss garden cress sprouts, which is rich in sulforaphane - a powerful antioxidant that tackles pigmentation at two critical points in the melanin cascade, both preventing it from being triggered and blocking its formation.
Then there are the exosomes, which I am a big fan of. The added apple exosomes accelerate cellular renewal and target brown spots, while green tangerine exosomes, derived from the vitamin C-rich tangerines of Jeju Island in Korea, soothe, hydrate and brighten.
We've also included acetyl glucosamine, which inhibits melanin production while boosting hyaluronic acid production, so your skin is evening out and staying hydrated at the same time. Arbutin and Azelaic Acid lighten dark spots and refine skin tone, Encapsulated Retinol improves texture and stimulates collagen without irritation and a Stabilised Vitamin C derivative activates on contact with the skin to brighten and defend against further discolouration. It really is a true brightening powerhouse.
What the testers say
In an independent consumer trial of 60 participants over six weeks, 78% said their skin looked brighter, 77% said skin tone appeared more even and 73% said the product faded the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation. It is worth noting that pigmentation takes time to fade - I recommend at least six weeks of consistent use.
Sarah's story
Results on paper are one thing. Seeing them on a real person - and hearing what they mean to them - is something else entirely.
Sarah came to us with pigmentation she described as "quite a problem." Over five months of consistent use of the Anti-Dark Spot Concentrate, we tracked her progress using VISIA - a specialist skin analysis system used in aesthetic clinics that photographs the skin under different light spectra to measure pigmentation, texture, pores and other skin concerns with clinical precision. It removes the guesswork and gives us an objective, comparable score over time.
Sarah's VISIA pigmentation score went from 9 to 31 over those five months - a 244% improvement. That is, by any measure, exceptional.
But what struck me most was what she said about it: "I never thought a change to my skincare routine could make such a big difference. The pigmentation is vastly improved. Now I can go out without makeup on, which for me is huge. It's made such a difference to how I feel, and my confidence."
That is exactly why we made this product. Clearer skin is not vanity - it is confidence, and it changes how people move through the world.
It's taken us several years to perfect this formula. It was worth the wait.
