Embracing Acne Awareness Month

As we step into June, it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on a common skin issue that affects so many people: acne.

June is Acne Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to discuss this common skin concern that brings people of all ages to my clinic seeking solutions.

June marks the beginning of summer – a season where increased humidity and sun exposure can exacerbate acne for many people. As temperatures rise, our skin produces more sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. This makes it an ideal time to learn about acne, look into its causes, and explore effective treatments.

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not just a teenage skin problem. It’s true that it often begins in adolescence, but it can persist into adulthood. I see patients in their 20s, 30s, and even beyond who suffer with breakouts. The main causes of adult acne are stress, hormonal changes, and lifestyle factors. Whether it’s due to the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy and menopause or stress-induced breakouts from our fast-paced lives, acne doesn’t discriminate by age.

Managing and preventing acne requires using the right products formulated with effective ingredients. I know the stores are flooded with acne-fighting formulas making several claims, but not all skincare is created equal. Choosing skincare that targets the underlying causes of acne – like excess oil production, bacterial growth and inflammation – is crucial.

Our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare line includes an all-in-one solution for acne prone skin. Not only does it treat acne, but it stops it from returning. Our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Anti-Blemish Concentrate is packed with fast-acting anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actives like salicylic acid, lemon myrtle extract and bakuchiol (which is a natural alternative to retinol) to purge the pores, combat shine and regulate sebum production.

Unlike many blemish-fighting products that dry the skin out, which leads to further breakouts, we included niacinamide to nourish and repair skin barrier function and chicory root extract to balance its microbiome. That’s not all. Anyone who has suffered with acne will know that scarring is a huge concern. Our Anti-Blemish Concentrate includes algae extract, which is clinically-proven to prevent scarring along with encapsulated azelaic acid to reduce pigmentation.

Once your acne is under control, if redness is an issue, I highly recommend the Dr Somji-Pro Active skincare Anti-Redness Concentrate. I formulated this product to alleviate the appearance of redness and flare-ups. What sets it apart is the inclusion of centella asiatica exosomes, which are abundant in anti-inflammatory properties. This ingredient was discovered after researchers in Asia observed animals rolling in tiger grass to heal their wounds. This same mechanism helps to reduce and heal inflammation on the skin, which as any acne sufferer will know, is so common.

As I always tell my patients, consistency is key. Incorporating these products into your daily skincare regimen can make a significant difference over time.

Acne Awareness Month gives us a great opportunity to remind ourselves that acne is a common issue. Whether you’re a teenager dealing with your first breakout or an adult managing stress-induced flare-ups, remember that effective acne treatments are available.

With the right products and a bit of patience, clearer skin is within reach.
