4 WAYS TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY SKIN WHILE TRAVELLING

A frequent traveller

As a frequent traveller, I know first-hand how visiting different climates can be tough on the skin. Whether it’s relaxing by the pool or braving the dry airplane air, these changes in the environment can take a toll on our skin. But with some careful skincare choices, you can maintain a healthy and hydrated complexion throughout your holiday.

Start your routine in-flight

Healthy holiday skin starts before you touchdown at your destination. The low humidity on aeroplanes and recirculating cabin air can cause trans-epidermal water loss and skin dehydration. So, how can you avoid dry skin in-flight? The obvious thing to do is to drink plenty of water throughout the journey, and try to resist the drinks trolley – alcohol can dehydrate the skin further.

Make sure your skin is well hydrated by skipping pore-clogging make-up and layering on a hydrating serum under a rich moisturiser.

I do this with our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Signature Serum applied under our Dr Somji Pro-Active Night Cream.

The serum is loaded with a blend of vitamins, like strengthening vitamin F, encapsulated vitamin C from green tangerine exosomes for deep antioxidant protection and vitamin E which is super moisturising. Smooth on a generous layer of our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Night Cream. The added humectants such as hyaluronic acid, will draw moisture into the skin and squalane prevents it from escaping. It also contains soothing jojoba seed oil, shea butter and rice germ oil to restore moisture balance, soothe and protect. And if, like me, you like to take advantage of the in-flight entertainment, our Night Cream also contains ectoin to protect against blue light emitted from screens.

Protect your skin in the sun

Whether you’re lounging by the pool, spending the day at the beach or exploring your holiday destination, sun protection is crucial for preventing skin damage and premature ageing. Our multi-tasking  Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF30 not only shields skin from harmful UV rays but also treats and repairs it. It’s loaded with antioxidant-rich stabilised vitamin C, green tangerine exosomes, hyaluronic acid, and ectoin which work in harmony to boost radiance, correct age spots and hydrate the skin. It’s also super light and sits beautifully under my make-up.

Cleanse away sebum and impurities

After a day out in the sun, my skin is usually craving a thorough cleanse. Remove a build-up of sebum, sunscreen and environmental pollutants with our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Detoxifying Charcoal Cleanser. The creamy formula is formulated with Japanese binchotan charcoal and kaolin clay, which quickly soak up excess oil and decongest the pores, leaving skin feeling squeaky clean and fresh. I also like to use it as a face mask twice a week, for a deeper cleanse.

Soothe skin after sun exposure

Travelling to different climates can really mess with the skin barrier, especially if you have sensitive or problematic skin. Sun exposure can exacerbate redness and flare-ups, so be sure to pack some skin soothing skincare. Our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Anti-Redness Concentrate is a brilliant skin healer for all skin types. It calms, soothes and cools, and it’s also perfect for alleviating redness, rashes, sensitivity and rosacea that can be triggered after too much sun exposure. This concentrate is filled with plant-derived centella exosomes, which are rich in anti-inflammatory properties to quickly soothe and calm irritated skin.

Reishi extract and antioxidant-rich passion fruit extract enhance skin regeneration, while patchouli extract calms, boosts collagen, and strengthens the skin barrier. It also contains oak, rosemary, and green coffee extract derivatives, along with vitamins B and E, to soothe irritation and guard against oxidative stress.

I hope my advice and product recommendations will help your skin remain healthy and radiant, no matter where your travels take you this summer.

Summer Skin SOS – essential tips for maintaining healthy and hydrated skin

While August brings sun-soaked days and warm, inviting weather, it also challenges our skin. Have you ever felt your skin feeling dry and dehydrated after time in the sun? This is a very common issue during the summer months and it’s down to a combination of factors.

Increased temperatures and prolonged exposure to the sun can strip the skin of its natural moisture barrier, leading to a loss of hydration. The sun’s UV rays not only dry out the skin, but also cause damage to skin cells, so they don’t retain moisture as well. Activities like swimming in chlorinated pools or saltwater can further dehydrate the skin.

If you like to escape the heat to air-conditioned environments, this too contributes to skin dryness due to the reduced humidity levels in the air.

All these elements can lead to skin feeling tight, flaky and less supple, which is why proper hydration from both the inside and out is crucial.

Hydration isn’t just about what you apply to your skin – it’s also about what you put into your body. Here’s how to keep your skin nourished and healthy from the inside-out this summer.

Drink water

Sip on water throughout the day (aim for at least 8 glasses) – remember, the skin is the largest organ in the body and it needs water just as much as the rest of you. If plain water feels a bit boring, infuse it with fresh fruits like lemon, berries, or mint for a refreshing twist.

Eat water-rich foods

Incorporating water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and leafy greens into your diet is another great way to boost hydration. These foods not only help keep you hydrated, but also provide essential vitamins and antioxidants that benefit the skin.

Have some herbal teas

Herbal teas, especially those with hydrating properties like chamomile or rooibos, can be a soothing way to increase your fluid intake. They’re great for hydrating the skin and can be enjoyed hot or iced.

Limit caffeine and alcohol

While it’s tempting to enjoy iced coffee or a cocktail by the pool, caffeine and alcohol are diuretics that cause the body to lose water and lead to skin dehydration. If you do indulge, be sure to balance it out with plenty of water and hydrating foods.

Use skincare that locks in moisture

It’s important to feed sun exposed skin with skincare products that lock in moisture to help prevent dehydration and protect the skin barrier. Hydrated skin not only looks healthier but also maintains its elasticity and resilience. My summer skin saviour is our multi-tasking Signature Serum. We invested over five years perfecting this serum. It includes 15 active ingredients and nourishing actives designed to enhance skin health, hydration and radiance.

We’ve included ingredients like vitamin C and antioxidant-rich green tangerine exosomes, which work together to not only soothe the complexion, but also significantly boost skin hydration by increasing hyaluronic acid production.

Our proprietary SOM1X blend includes a mix of vitamins, probiotics and plant extracts that combat free radicals, strengthen the skin barrier and protect its microbiome, supporting overall skin health and resilience.

I also recommend a good night cream like our Night Recovery Cream , which is loaded with humectants like hyaluronic acid, to draw moisture into the skin and squalane to prevent it from escaping. It also contains soothing jojoba seed oil, shea butter and rice germ oil to restore moisture balance, soothe and protect. Our potent SOM1X blend of vitamins, probiotics and plant extracts work hard overnight to deliver a healthy and radiant complexion.

Keeping your skin hydrated is all about a balanced approach – combining skincare products with a healthy diet and lifestyle. I hope that by incorporating these tips into your daily routine, you’ll not only feel better, but also see a noticeable difference in your skin’s hydration and radiance.

The Best Sunscreen To Keep Your Skin Safe

Your quest for the perfect sunscreen ends here…

As the weather warms up, it’s more important than ever to wear sunscreen to prevent premature ageing and skin cancer. I’ve struggled to find the perfect sunscreen for years.

As a skincare professional, I’ve been experimenting with sunscreen formulas for decades.

I found that they were all predictably similar and there was little consideration for user experience. Heavy textures often left my skin feeling greasy and clogged. Some left a chalky, white cast on my face – which is a common issue for people with deeper skin tones. And most sunscreens that I have used don’t sit well under make-up.

This frustration led me to create something better – a sunscreen for people who need efficiency without compromising on quality.

We set out to create a wearable sunscreen that would provide broad-spectrum protection against UV damage, while also brightening, hydrating and priming the skin for make-up application. A sun protection cream that was a pleasure rather than a chore to use.

After years of working on the formulation, we have developed just that – a sunscreen that protects against UV rays while catering to your skin’s needs.

Our Dr Somji Pro Active Skincare Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF30 is more than just a sunscreen—it’s a skincare multi-tasker designed for modern, fast-paced lifestyles.

First things first, it doesn’t compromise on protection. It offers superior broad-spectrum protection, which means it shields the skin against both skin-burning UVB rays and cancer-causing UVA rays. As concerns grow over the harmful effects of increased screen exposure, this formula also protects skin against blue light, and pollution too.

It’s packed with potent skin-perfecting ingredients. Stabilised vitamin C is an antioxidant-rich ingredient that boosts radiance and helps correct pigmentation, giving skin a healthy glow. Potent green tangerine exosomes, hyaluronic acid, and amino-acid ectoin act as bodyguards for the skin, providing protection, repair, and hydration. You also get wrinkle-smoothing benefits from the added peptide complex – matrixyl synthe 6.

And finally, it is a pleasure to use. Not only is it super lightweight which means it absorbs into the skin seamlessly. It also creates a smooth, primer-like canvas for make-up application – so no more worrying about your foundation sliding off your skin and your face looking like a blotchy mess by the end of the day.

As a mother of three, skincare developer and clinic owner, I juggle multiple roles and I understand the need for multi-faceted skincare products that simplify our routines while delivering exceptional results. Our Vitamin C Daily Defence Moisturiser SPF30 is a triple-threat formula that does just that.

We created this product with you all in mind – people who deserve the best in skincare without the hassle. Whether you’re dropping the kids off to school, commuting to work, lounging by a pool or enjoying a lazy weekend in the sun – this cream is your new go-to for radiant, protected skin.

Embracing Acne Awareness Month

Acne awareness month

As we step into June, it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on a common skin issue that affects so many people: acne.

June is Acne Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to discuss this common skin concern that brings people of all ages to my clinic seeking solutions.

June marks the beginning of summer – a season where increased humidity and sun exposure can exacerbate acne for many people. As temperatures rise, our skin produces more sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. This makes it an ideal time to learn about acne, look into its causes, and explore effective treatments.

Acne awareness month

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not just a teenage skin problem. It’s true that it often begins in adolescence, but it can persist into adulthood. I see patients in their 20s, 30s, and even beyond who suffer with breakouts. The main causes of adult acne are stress, hormonal changes, and lifestyle factors. Whether it’s due to the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy and menopause or stress-induced breakouts from our fast-paced lives, acne doesn’t discriminate by age.

Managing and preventing acne requires using the right products formulated with effective ingredients. I know the stores are flooded with acne-fighting formulas making several claims, but not all skincare is created equal. Choosing skincare that targets the underlying causes of acne – like excess oil production, bacterial growth and inflammation – is crucial.

Our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare line includes an all-in-one solution for acne prone skin. Not only does it treat acne, but it stops it from returning. Our Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare Anti-Blemish Concentrate is packed with fast-acting anti-inflammatory and antibacterial actives like salicylic acid, lemon myrtle extract and bakuchiol (which is a natural alternative to retinol) to purge the pores, combat shine and regulate sebum production.

Unlike many blemish-fighting products that dry the skin out, which leads to further breakouts, we included niacinamide to nourish and repair skin barrier function and chicory root extract to balance its microbiome. That’s not all. Anyone who has suffered with acne will know that scarring is a huge concern. Our Anti-Blemish Concentrate includes algae extract, which is clinically-proven to prevent scarring along with encapsulated azelaic acid to reduce pigmentation.

Once your acne is under control, if redness is an issue, I highly recommend the Dr Somji-Pro Active skincare Anti-Redness Concentrate. I formulated this product to alleviate the appearance of redness and flare-ups. What sets it apart is the inclusion of centella asiatica exosomes, which are abundant in anti-inflammatory properties. This ingredient was discovered after researchers in Asia observed animals rolling in tiger grass to heal their wounds. This same mechanism helps to reduce and heal inflammation on the skin, which as any acne sufferer will know, is so common.

As I always tell my patients, consistency is key. Incorporating these products into your daily skincare regimen can make a significant difference over time.

Acne Awareness Month gives us a great opportunity to remind ourselves that acne is a common issue. Whether you’re a teenager dealing with your first breakout or an adult managing stress-induced flare-ups, remember that effective acne treatments are available.

With the right products and a bit of patience, clearer skin is within reach.

Just because it’s trending, doesn’t mean it’s right for your skin

Why viral skincare advice can lead to problem skin.

Throughout my years in practice, I’ve seen patients whose skin has been permanently scarred, to faces that resemble sandpaper, to persistent inflammation. What’s truly disheartening is that many of these skin issues are self-inflicted.

Social media can be a breeding ground for false information. We’re living in an era where people are blindly following Instagram gurus and hopping onto the latest viral TikTok trend bandwagon. They are layering incompatible ingredients and subjecting their skin to harsh ingredients. All this is resulting in skin issues that need professional care.

My colleagues and I are constantly fighting off misconceptions and misinformation from patients, and my key message is always this: just because it’s trending doesn’t mean it is right for your skin.

Improper skincare can really wreak havoc on the skin. Impaired skin barriers, relentless breakouts, hypersensitivity and stubborn pigmentation are just some of the issues I am treating which have resulted after misuse of skincare.

While I have access to medical skincare, I found it hard to find a range that works on every patient, so I began mixing up bespoke skincare concoctions for some of my patients. They were loving the products and began to request more, and this was the beginning of the Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare journey.

My wife Henal (a skincare aesthetician) and I spent over half a decade researching, sourcing, perfecting, and trialing ingredients on ourselves, friends, family, and our in-clinic patients who had the most troublesome skin issues.

Our mission was to simplify skincare, to streamline routines, and to cater to all skin types and genders. Dr Somji Pro-Active Skincare is formulated with high concentrations of familiar heroes like hyaluronic acid, retinol, niacinamide, azelaic acid and probiotics, alongside cutting-edge finds from South Korea and Japan’s Juju Island such as plant-based exosomes.

While you might find other products containing similar ingredients, our formulations are pumped with the highest concentrations available. Naturally, this presented a unique challenge: how do we effectively deliver these potent actives into the skin without risking irritation?

We decided to use encapsulated and exosomal delivery systems for some of the ingredients like retinol and vitamin C. Instead of the ingredients sitting on the skin when applied, they work like tiny drones navigating through the skin’s layers, to deliver potent ingredients exactly where they are needed the most. By encapsulating active ingredients, we were able to ensure maximum efficacy without compromising the skin’s barrier.
